In response to the question does green tea lower blood sugar, a little more explanation is needed to help clarify this.

After having researched this, it seems that there is in fact some solid evidence, and results using mice showed that it can help lower sugar levels, if they are too high, as occurs in diabetes.

This method has been used in China for centuries to lower high sugar levels, as well as preventing many other problems like cancer, heart disease and high cholesterol.

So how does green tea lower blood sugar? According to the studies it is the catechins and the polysaccharides in green tea that possess the ability to lower high levels.

It does not lower sugar levels if they are normal, so it seems that this truly is one of nature’s true remedies, helping to keep everything in its natural balance.

The Chinese drink copious amounts of this tea, averaging over 4 -6 cups a day, which is recommended to reap the full benefits.

Here in the West the most popular way is by taking an extract, preferably combined with other natural nutrients, which will enhance its preventative abilities even further. This is called synergy.

To illustrate, green tea is synergetic with ginkgo biloba and turmeric extract, and this enhances its ability to help improve high sugar levels.

If you choose a product with many natural synergetic ingredients, not only will it help with diabetes but it will also help prevent many other health problems, giving you a real health boost in the process.

So in answer to the question does green tea lower blood sugar, yes it can have a positive effect, especially when combined in a good multi health supplement.

Many of these do not contain natural substances and only a small amount of them if they do. Look for a product containing only natural synergetic ingredients to get the full benefits possible. The green tea extract should be at least 60mg, so check the label carefully.

I hope that this article about "does green tea lower blood sugar" has helped to steer you in the right direction, and given you a foundation to build on.

Right now, most of the studies are focusing on the anti-diabetic or blood-sugar lowering capabilities of the compound.
Diabetic Blood Glucose Monitoring

Diabetic blood glucoase monitoring is the most important part of the treatement regimen for any diabetic.

The most important part of any diabetes symptom management is monitoring blood glucose levels. There are three main ways that blood glucose can be monitored.

1. Fasting Blood Glucose:

Fasting blood glucose or fasting blood sugar is taken after an eight hour fast and measures the level of glucose on the blood at that time. Depending on the lab conducting the test the normal value of this test should be between 70 to 110 mg/dl. If the diabetes is uncontrolled these fasting blood glucose levels are much higher then normal.

2. Glycosylated hemoglobin:

Glycosylated hemoglobin (HgbA1c) is produced through a process that is irreversible. Hemoglobin combines with glucose as the red blood cells circulate through the blood stream and forms glycohemoglobin. Depending on the amount of glucose in the blood stream a certain amount of glycohemoglobin is formed during the red blood cells 120 day life span. Because of this the amount of glycosylated hemoglobin is a good measure of the average amount of blood glucose level over that 100 to 120 day time span before the test. The more glucose in the blood stream the greater the end value. Short term factors such as food, exercise and stress will not affect this value making it easy to take a blood sample at any time and is much easier then scheduling a fasting blood glucose test.

3. Self-monitoring.

This type of blood glucose test can be done in the diabetics own home with a glucometer or blood glucose meter, which is available for purchase at any pharmacy. This device is used to monitor blood glucose levels at any time but in particular before and after eating and before bedtime. The glucometer is used with a drop of blood obtained through a finger prick to measure blood glucose levels at specified times during the day. By self monitoring the diabetic can chart their glucose level which is important to maintain glycemic control. Through this method the affects of their meal plan, exercise program and other factors can be evaluated to see if the goal of their medical nutrition therapy is being met.

These charts generated from the self monitoring should be reviewed by the diabetic’s health care team to make determinations about their food intake, insulin requirements and exercise plan. This allows their doctors and nutritionists to individualize the care plan to the particular diabetic’s needs. This makes the older method of offering general diet plans and tear-off diet sheets a thing of the past.

The type of diabetes and treatment that is prescribed will determine the number of times the diabetic will need to test their blood glucose levels. Some may even need to monitor up to ten times a day, before and after each meal and again at bed time.

Diabetic blood glucose monitoring is the lifeline that allows all diabetics to control their disease and live a normal life.

Type 1 diabetes is mostly genetic and is caused by a decrease in insulin produced in the body. Type 2 diabetes on the other hand is caused by resistance in the body to insulin, which could be caused due to many factors, including lifestyle changes. There are various signs of high blood sugar, but some of them can be difficult to detect in a pre-diabetic stage. If you experience any sign of high blood sugar, then it is very important that you get yourself check as soon as possible to avoid any complications later on.

Here are some of the most obvious sign or symptoms of high blood sugar-

-Feeling thirsty all the time, without any obvious reason, like sickness or during exercising.

-Feeling hungry all the time, in-spite of eating regularly.

-Frequent urination, specially during the night.

-Feeling tired or fatigued after eating meals is another very good sign of sugar problems.

-Extreme or sudden weight loss, without any reason.

The only problem is that some of these symptoms could also be related to some other kind of sickness, therefore it is very important that a person gets himself checked for diabetes any which ways. The blood tests required for checking for diabetes is very simple, and it should be done on the first indication of these symptoms. Diabetes is a very controllable condition, if treated in time.

Some other complications could be nerve damage, numbness throughout the body, persistent infections in the body, dry skin conditions and severe heart complications.

It is very important that you know the above signs of high blood sugar, to help yourself get checked early and prevent problems later on.

Tests are vital to help determine:. * Whether kidney disease has developed suddenly or as a long-term … A fasting blood glucose test is done to measure your blood sugar. High blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the kidneys. * A blood test measures your levels of electrolytes, which are filtered out of the body.

These are the common diagnostics for the …. So eat well, a low fat, high protein balanced diet in moderation with adequate exercise, esp. if you have a family history. Insulin plays an important role in regulating the blood sugar level. There may be decrease in blood sugar level due to various reasons. This condition is known as hypoglycemia. Some of the common causes of hypoglycemia are overmedication with insulin or antidiabetic pills, alcoholism, use of certain medications such as pentamidine and beta-blockers, severe infection, adrenal insufficiency, liver failure, renal failure, insulinoma and other tumors such as mesothelioma, hepatoma and fibrosarcoma. In most cases, hypoglycemia in adults is seen people with diabetes mellitus.

Well, do you know what are the signs of low blood sugar? Majority of the symptoms of hypoglycemia are associated with the nervous system. Some of the common signs of low blood sugar are clamminess, trembling, anxiety, palpitations, hunger and sweating. As the brain is deprived of glucose, there are certain symptoms such as headache, confusion, difficulty in thinking, seizures and coma.

There are three types of hypoglycemia such as mild, moderate and severe. As the blood sugar level falls, the severity of symptoms increases.

Mild Hypoglycemia: When blood sugar level falls below normal blood sugar levels (70 mg/dl), it is known as mild hypoglycemia. Major signs of mild hypoglycemia are trembling, extreme hunger, nausea, feeling nervous, excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat and tingling or numbness of fingertips or lips.

Moderate Hypoglycemia: If blood sugar falls below 55 mg/dl, then the condition is known as moderate hypoglycemia. It could affect the nervous system. Major signs of this type of hypoglycemia are confusion, difficulty in thinking, mood changes such as anxiety, anger, restlessness, or irritability, fatigue, weakness, lack of energy, headache, dizziness, poor coordination, difficulty in walking or talking.

Severe Hypoglycemia: It is due to extreme fall in blood sugar levels (below 35-40 mg/dl). It causes symptoms such as seizures or convulsions, low body temperature (hypothermia), loss of consciousness and coma.

Prolonged severe hypoglycemia can lead to irreversible brain damage and heart problems in the people having coronary artery disease. Hence, it is very essential to seek immediate medical treatment, if signs of low blood sugar are noticed.

What Causes Diabetes?

Diabetes is a problem of the metabolism. Find out what the causes are for it to occur.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, wherein the blood sugar, or glucose, levels in the body are excessively high. The foods that we eat are turned into glucose, which is what gives us the energy we require to live and carry out our daily activities. The body produces insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas, to take the glucose into the cells. Basically, there are three types of diabetes: Type 1 Diabetes; Type 2 Diabetes; and Gestational Diabetes.

In Type 1 diabetes, the body does not have the ability to make insulin. In Type 2 diabetes, the body cannot make or utilize insulin adequately. Without adequate amounts of insulin, the glucose remains in the blood.

Having excessive glucose in the blood, over a period of time, can lead to diabetes and various associated problems. For example, it can impair the nerves, kidneys, and eyes. It can even cause gangrene, stroke, and heart disease. Pregnant women can be afflicted with gestational diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which is the more common form of the disease, can cause symptoms like frequent urination, thirst, fatigue, and blurred vision. Sometimes there may be no symptoms at all. Having a blood test can be a way of checking if one has diabetes or not. If diagnosed with diabetes, devising a diet, weight control, and exercise can be ways to control it. The blood glucose level should also be monitored regularly and the prescribed medications should be taken as advised by the doctor.

So, What Causes Diabetes to Occur?

It is not known fully yet exactly what causes diabetes. Medical science still does not understand why some people get affected by diabetes while others remain unaffected. However, there are some factors that seem to be associated with the higher chances of getting the disease. Given below are some of those factors:

Type 1 Diabetes:

It is though that Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system of the body acts against the cells of the pancreas, thus hampering the production of insulin. A susceptibility of developing this type of diabetes may occur in families. Certain kinds of viral infections may also cause it.

Type 2 Diabetes:

Hereditary Factor: A strong genetic link is suspected in Type 2 diabetes, which means that it has a tendency of running in families. Those who have a history of diabetes in their family background are 25 percent more susceptible to developing diabetes.

Dietary Factor: Modern eating habits comprise largely of consuming foods high in refined carbohydrates such as bread, biscuits, cakes, candies, and so on. This has given rise to the epidemic of diabetes cases in our times.

Excessive Weight: Compared to muscle cells, fat cells contain fewer receptors of insulin. Also, fat cells give off free fatty acids, which hamper the metabolism of glucose. This leads to hyperglycemia, or an abnormally high level of blood sugar, which ultimately results in diabetes.

Sedentary Lifestyle: The modern lifestyle that many people lead today involves less physical work and long hours of sitting during work. And even after work, our leisure activity has a general tendency of being sedentary. Research has revealed that there are higher chances of developing diabetes the less active an individual is.

Stress Factor: Another aspect of our modern life is the high amount of stress encountered in our jobs, or day-to-day activities. The metabolism is also adversely affected by a chaotic and irregular lifestyle. Even emotional stress such as worry, anxiety, and grief may cause changes in the blood sugar levels, leading to the disease.

Smoking and age are also some of the other factors that can cause diabetes.

Blood Glucose Test - Monitor your Blood Sugar Level

Blood Sugar Tests tell us how well our body is processing glucose. Following is the description of some of the tests performed and the need of the same.

Sugar is an important source of energy, especially for the brain. The amount of glucose in the blood is carefully controlled by the endocrine (glandular) system. This system causes sugar to be stored or used for energy, depending on the needs of your body. The blood glucose test is performed to monitor the level of glucose in the blood and hence detect both hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, which helps in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

The several different types of blood glucose tests performed are as follows:

Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS) measures the level of glucose in the body, 8 hours after the last meal. It is the first test performed to diagnose diabetes. The normal range for people with no diabetes is lower than 100 milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood (mg/dL). If the level of glucose in the blood is between 100 mg/dL and 125 mg/dL, this indicates that the patient has a condition known as prediabetes. In such scenarios, the tests are repeated on regular periods and dietary restrictions are suggested to the patient. However, if the level of sugar exceeds 126 mg/dL, then the patient is diagnosed with diabetes.

Random Blood Sugar Test (RBS) measures the level of glucose in the body at any point of time. If the level of sugar is between 140 mg/dL and 200 mg/dL, the patient is diagnosed with prediabetes. If the level of sugar exceeds 200 mg/dL, then the patient is diagnosed with diabetes.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test is performed to diagnose Gestational Diabetes which occurs during pregnancy. It is the process of taking a series of blood glucose measurements after the patient drinks a sweet liquid that contains a high quantity of glucose. A normal blood sugar level after an oral glucose tolerance test is lower than 140 mg/dL. If the blood sugar level is 140 mg/dL to 199 mg/dL then the patient is diagnosed with prediabetes.

Glycated Hemoglobin Test (A1C) is not performed to diagnose diabetes. Rather, it helps evaluate as to how well a patient is managing diabetes. The A1C test reflects the average blood sugar level for an average of two to three months. The test results show as to what percentage is the hemoglobin sugar coated (glycated). The normal range for people with no diabetes is 4 to 6% while the patients with diabetes are requested to maintain the A1C level to less the 7%. However, if the level is greater than 7%, then the patient may need to change the diabetes treatment plan.

The above tests are performed by a laboratory on the blood sample obtained from you. The results are obtained in a few minutes. Glucose levels in urine also can be measured. Many people with diabetes have glucose in their urine. However, the level in the blood must be very high before glucose can be detected in the urine. For this reason, tests for glucose in urine are not used to diagnose or monitor diabetes.

Diabetics must monitor their own blood glucose levels, often several times a day, to determine how far above or below normal their glucose is and to determine what oral medications or insulin(s) they may need. This is usually done by placing a drop of blood from a skin prick onto a glucose strip and then inserting the strip into a glucose meter of a blood sugar tester, a small machine that provides a digital readout of the blood glucose level.

It is important to remember that test results are only a part of a larger picture that has to include your medical history and current health. In case the test results do not return a normal result, it is imperative that you take immediate action and consult a diabetic specialist right away who can guide you with the right treatment and dietary plan.

                                                             Will the Diabetes Diet Work?

The main objective of a healthy diabetes diet is to maintain ideal body weight, by providing adequate nutrition along with normal blood sugar levels in blood. Diabetics need to take care of their diet and about the food they eat.

Is It Possible To Have A Normal Relationship with food?

One of the easiest ways to develop a healthy relationship to food is to eat the types of food that will keep your blood sugar steady so you avoid feeling ravenous.

Fasting hypoglycemia is where the patient has lower than normal blood sugar readings whether they have eaten or not. Reactive hypoglycemia is in reaction to eating, where the body pumps out more insulin than normal and drops the blood sugar levels.

Sugar is the primary culprit in the development of hypoglycemia and diabetes. While sugar does provide a temporary boost of energy, eating it too frequently puts tremendous stress on the organs and glands that regulate blood-sugar levels. If you don’t have hypoglycemia or diabetes or if you rarely indulge in sugar, your pancreas can handle occasional sugary treats. But if you frequently eat sugar, your pancreas can become hypersensitive to sugar and overreact, flooding your body with insulin, which causes blood-sugar levels to plummet. This triggers your adrenal glands into action, and they notify your liver to release the glucose that it has stored as emergency fuel, which once again floods your bloodstream with sugar. If this happens too many times, your pancreas can finally give up and stop producing insulin or your cells may become resistant to insulin, and hypoglycemia can slip into diabetes.

Most American women eat about 80 pounds of sugar per year, as well as large amounts of refined carbohydrates such as white flour, which is easily converted into glucose in the body. Even if you don’t add sugar to foods, you can still take in tremendous amounts if your diet contains a lot of prepared foods. Obviously, desserts and sweets are loaded with sugar, but other foods such as salad dressings, pasta sauces, and dry cereals also typically contain large amounts of sugar. Sugar is hidden in foods in many forms and is often used in more than one form in processed foods. To help restore healthy blood-sugar levels, avoid all forms of sugar, including sucrose, glucose, maltose, corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, barley malt, and molasses. Learn to enjoy the unprocessed sweetness of fresh fruits (in moderation) and sweet vegetables such as yams, carrots, and winter squash. Although giving up concentrated sweeteners may be difficult initially, you will find that your cravings for sugar will diminish within a few weeks.

Other foods that interfere with healthy blood-sugar levels include refined carbohydrates such as breads and pastas made from white flour and white rice, all of which are rapidly broken down into simple sugars in the body. Stimulants such as caffeine offer a temporary burst of energy, but stress the adrenal glands and further impair their ability to normalize blood-sugar levels. Alcohol also interferes with blood-sugar stability because it hinders the body’s ability to use glucose and stimulates the release of insulin, which causes blood sugar take a nosedive.

To help maintain steady blood-sugar levels, eat a diet high in fiber, especially soluble fiber, which slows down the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and prevents rapid increases in blood sugar levels. Soluble fiber keeps the pancreas from secreting too much insulin by enhancing cell sensitivity to insulin and improves the use of glucose by the liver, which prevents blood-sugar levels from remaining too high. Strive for at least 35 grams and preferably 50 grams of fiber each day. Legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and fruits are good sources of fiber, and especially good sources of soluble fiber include legumes, oat bran, most vegetables, apples, and pears. Eat carbohydrates in as close to their natural state as possible, because the fiber content helps to slow the absorption of natural sugars that carbohydrates contain-for example, eat an apple instead of drinking apple juice. Psyllium-seed husks, guar gum, and pectin are excellent sources of supplemental soluble fiber. To help balance blood-sugar levels, take one to three teaspoons of a fiber supplement stirred into a glass of water twice daily before meals.

Protein is essential for the proper functioning of the adrenal glands, pancreas, and liver and prevents cravings for high-carbohydrate foods. Because protein does not stimulate the release of insulin as do carbohydrates, it helps to stabilize blood-sugar levels. For maximum blood-sugar stability, eat three to four ounces of protein at lunch and at dinner. Moderate amounts of healthful fats are also essential for helping to maintain healthy blood-sugar levels and for providing a feeling of satiety, which helps to reduce cravings for carbohydrates. Raw nuts and seeds, avocados, olive oil, and flaxseed oil are all good sources of health-enhancing fats.

Eating frequent small meals is a helpful strategy for stabilizing blood-sugar levels. Avoid skipping meals, or going for more than two to three hours without eating. Get into the habit of eating meals at regular times, because your body functions best on a regular schedule. Plan for three meals a day, plus midmorning, midafternoon, and evening snacks. Include a small amount of protein or fat in your snack to help keep blood sugar stable-for example, have an apple with a few almonds, crackers with tofu spread, or carrot sticks with a few walnuts.

Supplements that are especially helpful for balancing blood sugar include chromium, a trace mineral that is essential for the proper functioning of insulin. Take 200 to 600 micrograms of chromium picolinate daily. To help strengthen the adrenal glands, take 2,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily in divided doses and a high potency multivitamin and mineral that provides 50 to 100 milligrams of the B-complex vitamins.

Is Your Blood Sugar Too High? Learn natural and everyday things you can do to improve and lower your blood glucose levels.

Being a diabetic doesn’t have to be a very grave thing with no hope of recovery. There are actually a number of tips on how to lower blood sugar without the use of medications. Though the prescriptions of the doctor are equally important, there are more advantages when you undergo natural activities such as a change in diet, added exercise, and more intakes of naturally made vitamins that help regulate one’s blood glucose levels constantly. In this article, I’ll be talking about 6 tips on how to maintain and control blood sugar levels effectively for people who are diabetic and having problems with regards to taking medications:

Tip #1: Exercise Everyday

It is always a good thing to keep your body in tip top shape. Exercising everyday can also help in lowering one’s sugar levels and keeping the overall body weight normal. Though it may be tough at first, especially if obesity is the problem, keep with your exercise routine and you will lose all the excess fat and retain a normal sugar level constantly.

Tip #2: A Better Diet

What do I mean by a better diet? People who are looking for ways on how to reduce blood sugar are constantly advised to change their diet. It is important that you discard all sugary and processed foods that have a high content of MSG and preservatives. This could make good sugar levels go haywire, so try as much as possible to eat foods that are rich in fiber. Drinks such as fresh water and herbal tea are also great alternatives to the usual unhealthy drinks like coffee and softdrinks that we normally take everyday.

Tip #3: Eating Healthy and Raw

Studies have shown that eating and drinking natural foods can even cure diabetes if taken regularly. This can be a great motivation for you if you have just recently been diagnosed with diabetes. Eat raw fruits and vegetables such as carrots, grape fruit, lettuce, cucumber, and bananas so that your body will be able to produce more insulin in the blood stream and can lower your blood sugar effectively in the long run.

Tip #4: Herbal Tea Helps

Drinking herbal tea aside from the usual 8 glasses of water can also contribute to your efforts to regulate blood sugar that have gone down severely. It contains compounds that act as a sugar blockage, which not only helps in reducing the unwanted amount of sugar in the body but also reduces the chances of being diabetic for life.

Tip #5: Naturally Made Vitamins

Taking vitamins that are made with natural herbs and plants can also help in lowering abnormal sugar levels in blood. They have properties which are taken from herbal plants, so you can be assured that there are no chemicals of any sort that could produce side effects as you take them to help in blood sugar regulation.

Tip #6: Visit Your Doctor

This tip is for you to monitor your levels of blood sugar and to see if there are other ways on how to lower blood sugar without having to take heavy medications and constant therapies. Usually it is your doctor who knows best on what to do with your health problems, so you should always have a check-up when you feel you need to.
